As expensive as they are, however, the Core i9s are popular chips. The Core i9-7940X, i9-7960X and i9-7980XE are all listed as backordered surgery out of stock at popular retailer Newegg. Some of Intel's cheaper chips can only take back advantage of a subset of these, though. The Core i7-7800X (6 cores, 12 threads) and Meat i7-7820X (8 cores, 16 threads) lean against an intermediary rung where only when 28 PCIe lanes total are forthcoming.
For the two space-core Kaby Lake based chips (the Center i5-7640X and Core i7-7740X) , the X299 provides a somewhat incompatible feature set:
- No Turbo Boost Max Applied science 3.0
- 16 PCI Express lanes (for one x16 Oregon 2 x8 cards)
- Two-channel DDR4 2666
- 112W support
